Dental Crowns
What Is a Dental Crown?
A crown protects a tooth that has been undergone a root canal or received other treatment for trauma or decay. The crown completely covers the portion of the tooth above the gum line, offering both beauty and strength.
The restoration improves a tooth’s shape and size while also making a fragile tooth stronger. This helps you avoid more extensive repairs in the future. With proper care, you can expect to enjoy your customized tooth restoration for up to a decade or more.

Dental crowns are also used to replace missing teeth by supporting bridges or topping dental implants.
We create one-of-a-kind crowns customized to each patient so they are completely comfortable and look beautiful. Our crowns are made from high-quality materials, such as porcelain or ceramic, that can be carefully matched to the color of surrounding teeth.
Although our Lake Charles-area dental practice features advanced CEREC technology to create a crown in just one visit, in some cases, we might recommend a traditional crown that is placed over two visits. These restorations are made from porcelain, resin, metal, or porcelain-fused-to-metal to meet your specific needs.
What Is CEREC?
CEREC allows our knowledgeable and proficient dental team to create high-quality, metal-free crowns that are customized for your comfort in just one visit. Milled in-house from medical-grade porcelain, CEREC crowns are designed to blend seamlessly with existing teeth for a beautiful smile. This advanced technology is also used to craft veneers, inlays, and onlays.
A Same-Day Dental Crown Solution
Traditional dental crowns normally take two appointments, but Lake Area Dentistry in the Lake Charles area uses advanced imaging and same-day fabrication technology to get you in and out in one visit. Plus, you won’t have to fuss with a temporary crown while you wait for your permanent dental restoration.

Will Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?
If your crown is needed to repair a damaged tooth, complete a root canal, or prevent future damage to a tooth, that is typically considered medically necessary. This means that most insurance plans cover at least part of the cost.
Lake Area Dentistry accepts most major insurance plans. Insurance plans and policies vary, so we can work with your insurance provider directly to verify that crowns are covered.

Financing Options
We also accepts financing through CareCredit to make treatment as affordable as possible for our patients from Lake Charles, Carlyss, Moss Bluff, and surrounding communities.
CareCredit splits the total cost of treatment into affordable monthly payments. These installments allow patients to get the treatment they need without experiencing an undue financial burden.

How to Protect Your Dental Crown

Watch What You Eat
You should avoid very hard foods, which can shorten the lifespan of the restoration. That includes chewing on ice. Also, be extra cautious with hard and sticky foods if you have a temporary crown, which is more easily dislodged than a permanent crown.

Brush Twice a Day and Floss Daily
Take extra care to clean where the gum meets the crowned tooth. You should avoid abrasive toothpaste, which can scratch porcelain. Don't brush vigorously around a temporary crown. Floss downward and pull the floss out from front to back so you don't snag your temporary crown and cause it to come loose.

Minimize Wear and Tear
If you grind your teeth, you should consider wearing a nightguard to protect the restoration and your teeth. You should also avoid habits like chewing on pens or your nails and opening packages with your teeth.
Dental Crown Alternatives

Bridges
A bridge consists of a false tooth bookended by two crowns. Although an implant-supported crown is preferable, bridges are more affordable. You also might not be eligible for implant placement, a type of oral surgery.

Veneers
Made from durable porcelain materials, veneers are ideal for treating cosmetic flaws that affect the front teeth. These thin porcelain shells conceal aesthetic imperfections, helping a smile look pristine.

Inlays
Inlays are a type of restoration that is used to fill in the central biting surface of a tooth between its cusps. Think of inlays as similar to dental fillings, but able to restore a larger portion of a tooth's structure.

Onlays
Onlays are another type of dental restoration but this treatment also protects the cusps of a tooth. This restores the overall biting surface of a damaged tooth without capping it.
What Dental Factors Affect Cost?
Materials Used
Our dentists use various materials to make crowns, and depending on quality, these materials can range in price. Higher quality materials, such as porcelain and ceramic, will cost more than resin or metal materials.
Preparatory Procedures
Your teeth have to be free of gum disease and decay before the crown is placed, which may make preparatory procedures like a root canal or periodontal care necessary. Dental implant placement is also needed for singe-tooth replacement.
Same-Day Crowns
Our dentists can make a dental crown in-office in just one day using CEREC® technology, which will add to the cost of your procedure. Traditional crowns are also available, which may be cheaper, but are less convenient.
Sedation Options
Our dentists can administer free nitrous oxide to all patients to help calm nerves that often accompany dental visits. We also offer mild oral sedation, which is a separate cost. While sedation dentistry adds to the cost, the comfort provided is often worth it.

We Make Dental Care Affordable
With Financing Options
The teams at our offices in Lake Charles, Carlyss, and Moss Bluff, LA, strives to provide affordable dental care for a wide range of budgets.
Insurance
Our dental office accepts most major insurance plans, which can help you cover at least part of the cost of treatment. However, insurance will only cover this cost if your dental crown is a restorative dental treatment rather than a cosmetic procedure.
CareCredit
If you don't have dental insurance, our office accepts CareCredit® financing to help you split the total cost of dental treatment into affordable monthly payments. CareCredit can help you get the treatment you need without undue financial anxiety.
Cosmetic vs. Restorative Repair
Insurance plans will often cover part of the cost of a dental crown if it’s considered a medically necessary restorative treatment. Here’s how to tell if your dental crown will be covered:

Cosmetic Procedure
Cosmetic procedures involving dental crowns work to improve the aesthetics of your smile, but not the function. This can mean whitening discoloration and deep stains, fixing the size or shape of your tooth, or repairing minor cracks or chips. Cosmetic dental procedures are rarely covered by insurance. Our dentists can help you confirm if your treatment is cosmetic or not.

Restorative Treatment
Aesthetic improvement may be a positive side effect of dental crown treatment, but it isn't the goal. Restorative dental treatment is focused on improving the function of your teeth. Restorative treatments involve restoring the tooth after a root canal infection, cavity, or decay. It can also involve restoring structural damage to the tooth, like cracks or breaks that affect function. Also, replacing an old crown can be considered a restorative treatment.

Went in today to get assessments on work I needed done and to set up and plan to get everything taken care! I suffer from severe generalized anxiety and the... Read More dentist makes that 10x worse. Well not at this office. I’ve never felt more comfortable in a dentist office in my life. The receptionists and girls behind the desk were welcoming and some of the friendliest people you can find. With nerves still running high I was then introduced to my dental assistant and while I’m terrible with remembering names she truly was fantastic at lessening the anxiousness and not making me feel terrible for the way my teeth look. Then comes Dr. Price. Truly the first dentist I’ve ever found that put me at peace with being there and needing work done. I’ve always had previous dentists and assistants lecture me and make me feel worse than I already did about the condition of my mouth and teeth. Not the case with Dr. Price. Hands down the best dentist I’ve had and that’s before I’ve had a second of work done. His detailed explanation of things and complete honesty was such a blessing for me because I didn’t feel an ounce of embarrassment like I normally would. Felt like I was talking to a friend that I’ve known for years. And there was not an instance where I felt like they were trying to upcharge or upsell things that really weren’t necessary being that we are getting everything taken care of on time. Weird to say but after my visit today I’m actually excited to get back in there and get myself taken care of finally! Truly an amazing staff from top to bottom!
