About Dental Implants The Basics of Implant-Supported False Teeth

Dental implants are small posts that are surgically embedded in the jawbone. Each implant is topped by an abutment in order to hold a dental restoration securely. The implant placement is performed by skilled oral surgeons and periodontists we've partnered with for years. The Lake Area Dentistry team handles the custom implant restoration.

Artificial Tooth Roots

The implant posts that are anchored in the jawbone function much like the roots of natural teeth. The titanium fuses with the bone structure over time, a process known as osseointegration.

Custom Restorations

The implants are not the false teeth themselves. A custom restoration made from zirconia or IPS® e.max ceramic snaps into place on the implants. The restorations are very strong and look realistic.

Stability and Durability

With the implants and restoration completed, patients will have a restored smile that looks just like natural teeth. The restoration remains securely fixed in position while biting, chewing, and speaking.

Implant restorations consist of three pieces.

The implant, usually a titanium rod, a connector, called an abutment, and finally, a prosthetic tooth.

Missing a Tooth? It's a Common Condition

Dental Implant Options How Dentists Can Treat Tooth Loss

There are numerous implant treatment options available depending on the extent of a patient's tooth loss and the health of their jawbone. We'll always tailor implant procedures to meet a person's needs.

Implant crown

Implant-Supported Crowns

For people missing a single tooth, a crown supported by an individual dental implant is ideal. The implant and crown fill the gap in your smile, improving smile aesthetics and dental health.

Implant bridge

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges are excellent for people who are missing a few teeth in a row. The bridge spans the space left by the missing teeth, with two or more implants used to fix the restoration in place.

Implant denture

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are ideal for people missing most or all of their teeth. The denture can be used on the top or bottom dental arch. The number of implants required for the denture varies based on the patient's needs.

All-on-4

All-on-4 Dental Implants

Those in need of a full denture may qualify for All-on-4® implants. This system supports a denture using four strategically placed dental implants. Digital X-rays and software help determine the best implant placement.

Are You Concerned About Cost and Dental Anxiety?

Many people have legitimate concerns about the cost of dental implants and other details of treatment. That's why our dentists work closely with you at our offices in Lake Charles, DeQuincy, Kinder, and Sulphur.

Prices and Financing

Dr. Ardoin and his whole staff go above and beyond to do a great job! I know I am in good hands when I am there. They always ask if I'm having any issues or mouth pain and work until they resolve the issue/pain. Ginger is so sweet, it is like talking to a long-time friend when I see her to get my teeth cleaned. She is a great asset to the team! Over the last year, Ginger even checks my blood pressure before any work is started. Wonderful dental work, fantastic employees...you just cannot go wrong by calling on Dr. Ardoin's office for your dental needs.

It has been more years than I can count since my last dentist appointment. The last three, with three different dentist, did not go well. I did not have any confidence in them and did not go back to them. Two broken teeth last week changed my situation to a have to. I called Lake Area Dentistry last Thursday and was given an appointment for the following Monday. I was so satisfied with Dr. Price, he saved my two teeth, I scheduled my next appointment for Friday to get more much needed work done. Thank you Dr. Price and Lake Area Dentistry! Good people!

The Benefits of Dental Implants

Crowns, bridges, and dentures supported by dental implants have numerous advantages over traditional options.

Prevents Bone Loss and Gum Recession

Without dental roots to support, the jawbone and gumline lose density. Dental implants stimulate the jaw, preventing these oral health problems from occurring.

Excellent Stability for False Teeth

A removable denture could slip out of place while eating or speaking, even with strong dental adhesives. Implant-supported restorations will not budge, and you can enjoy all of your favorite foods.

Improved Appearance and Confidence

A crown, bridge, or denture held in place by dental implants helps you look younger and healthier. You can smile with renewed confidence, and the results are indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Am I a Good Dental Implant Candidate?

It's quite likely if your Lake Charles Dentistry dentist determines you meet these qualifications:

  • You do not smoke or you can quit for good before surgery. Tobacco inhibits healing.
  • You have enough healthy jawbone to support the titanium implants. If not, a bone graft may need to be performed.
  • You can devote several months to dental implant treatment from the first surgery to the final restoration placement.
  • You promise to practice regular brushing and flossing to preserve your implants and oral health.
  • You do not have dental issues like gum disease or severely decayed natural teeth. These would have to be addressed first.
  • You should be in good overall health, without chronic conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.

The Dental Implant Procedure

For most patients, the dental implant process will take around four to six months. This treatment timeline offers a general overview of what to expect.

We partner with trusted specialists for complete and streamlined implant care.
We partner with trusted specialists for complete and streamlined implant care.

Initial Consultation

During your first visit, we'll perform a full dental exam and assess your candidacy for dental implants. We'll go over potential risks so you can make an informed decision.
1

First Oral Surgery

During the first oral surgery, the implant post is fixed into the jawbone and gum tissue. Sedation and local anesthetic are used to make the process virtually painless.
2

Osseointegration

Over the next four to six months, osseointegration takes place. The bone heals around the titanium post as if it were a natural tooth root. This process makes implants successful.
3

Placing the Abutment

After osseointegration is complete, the implant abutment is placed. This piece connects the implant post to the implant restoration.
4

Second Healing Period

Patients have another recovery period after the second oral surgery — usually four to six weeks — so their gums can heal around the abutment.
5

The Implant Restoration

Using advanced modeling and planning software, we create a custom crown, bridge, or denture that is natural-looking and long-lasting.
6

Attaching the Restoration

With the restoration completed, we'll make sure it fits comfortably atop the abutments. The final results of treatment are dramatic.
